Joy Enriquez is truly a joy to behold! And when you hear her soulful gospel sound you’ll agree.
Entering the entertainment industry when she was just 11-years-old on TV Show “Star Search”, Joy later released her debut album in 2000.
In 2004, she married record producer Rodney Jerkins and the couple raise their four children in her native Los Angeles; Rodney Jr, seven, Heavenly Joy, six, Hannah Joy, three, Royal David, one.
Her beautiful song, “Shine,” featuring daughter Heavenly Joy, who was a contestant on “America’s Got Talent,” is not only uplifting and inspiring but helps to bring awareness to early breast cancer detection and encouraging women to get timely check ups.
Joy’s third studio album, “The Call” was released earlier this year. BellaLAMag.com got to find out more about this LA-based artist:
Where are you from?
How did you get your start in the music industry?
I was on Star Search when I was 15 years old. Throwback!
How would you describe your music?
My new album, The Call. It is my life story.
What inspires you?
This morning, I was talking to my kids about always putting others first before ourselves. And I spread my love for others through music. A close friend of mine came to me not too long ago and told me that my song, Shine, inspired her to have hope and to keep fighting Breast Cancer and spread awareness. She is just one of my many inspirations.
What’s the best advice you have received?
My grandmother used to tell my mother and then my mother told me, “Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are.” It’s so important to have God fearing, trustworthy friends.
What is one of the proudest moments of your career so far?
Watching my daughter at 5 years old, sing in front of thousands of people with no fear at all.
How do you want to be remembered?
I want to be remembered for being a loving person, a true friend and for sharing music that touches and mends people’s hearts.
What advice do you offer upcoming artists?
I always tell artists to write from deep in their heart, create music from their own experiences; share from where they’ve been to where they are now. That way the mess will become a message!
What’s the biggest life lesson you’ve had to learn?
No matter how hard it gets, don’t give up! Because with God all things are possible and with Him, the best is yet to come!
Bella LA’s tagline is “beauty defined by you.” How do you define beauty?
Beauty is from the inside out!
“Do not let your adorning be external…but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” I Peter 3:3-4
Who we are on the inside is more important that what we look like on the outside. We are created in the image of God…We are all beautiful in His eyes…One of a Kind!
How do you spend your time when you’re not working?
I’m always working, I just have multiple job titles. Wife, Mommy, Recording artist…I have been married for 12 years, I have a 7 year old boy, 6 year old girl, 3 year old girl, 16 month old boy, a dog and 2 goldfish. So how do I spend my time when I’m not working? The answer would have to be, I sleep.
How do you juggle life as a parent and artist?
With God’s grace and prayer. I have a prayer closet that I go to because sometimes it’s gets so crazy and I need to turn off the phones, find a quiet moment when the husband is at work, the 2 toddlers are napping, the 2 older kids are are finishing schoolwork, because I home school the kids I can do that, and the dinner is baking in the oven, I run upstairs into the closet and just close the door and listen to Gods voice. He is always there to give me the peace that passes all understanding.
