Frogtown sits between the 5 freeway and the concrete banks of the LA River. This Silverlake-adjacent location is currently basking in the glow of SALAZAR, a Mexican BBQ showcase in a former auto body shop.
Entering this tremendously inviting open air eatery feels like you’re walking into your coolest friend’s backyard. Chef/co-founder Esdras Ochoa offers the fiery flavors of his Sonora homeland through a grill-driven menu of meats, fish, vegetables and handmade tortillas.
The Asador crank-operated grill is the star of the show and a giant window into the kitchen lets you view as meals are charred to perfection. The minimalist menu is flawless. Start off with one of their taco and quesadilla options, then move on to a farmer’s market inspired-salad and the “Los Primitivos” section with long boned tomahawk pork chops and thick hangar steaks.
Creamy, pommes aligot-inspired potato purée laced with tiny fresh chorizo sausages is the star of the sides menu, and a sign of serious talent in the kitchen.
