After 23 years of serving as the primary caregiver for her autistic son, it sent Syrenthia Farris close to burnout. She knew that something needed to be done to better support parents and caregivers of those with disabilities, so the dedicated mom set up non-profit, Parents of Children with All Special Needs (POCWASN).
“Many parents, including myself, often lead lives that are consumed by our children’s disability, which can in many cases, lead to isolation,” Farris told Bella NYC. “Our goal is to provide services to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul of those who dedicate themselves to the care of people with special needs. Parents and caregivers who feel nurtured and supported are able to better nurture their families.”
POCWASN offers a number of services, including group meetings, individual and family counseling, health and fitness, beauty and fashion tips and entertainment outings. The organization also provides services under the Eileen’s Care Program, which consists of laundry, cleaning and personal cooking services for their terminally ill parents/caregivers.
